Hot Chocolate on a Stick (Hearts)

Hot Chocolate is a favorite drink in our house during the winter, especially on snowy days like we're having today.  We will drink all kinds of hot cocoa, from the cheap Nestle and Swiss Miss, to the gourmet Ghirardelli. We love it in all forms.

Hot Chocolate on a Stick (Hearts)

I think I have found my favorite hot chocolate option in this recipe, Hot Chocolate on a Stick.  It is such a great perk that these will keep in a sealed container for one year, and all I have to do is warm up some milk or cream, and stir in my stick.  It's a creamy, chocolaty treat...no marshmallows needed!

To celebrate Valentine's Day, I made heart shaped cocoas and will be giving them as gifts.  Just pick up this Wilton 12-cavity heart mold (hint: it's only $9.99 at Target and will probably be discounted after V-day).  The rest of the batch I made in regular ice cube trays, which also work out perfectly.  There is no need to line the mold with plastic wrap, or spray them with anything.  The chocolate easily pops out of the tray when hardened.

Hot Chocolate on a Stick

Pick up some favor bags at your local craft store and wrap the chocolate sticks individually to give them away for Valentine's Day.  They are also the perfect addition to your holiday gift basket this coming year.  It's never too late to plan ahead!

Hot Chocolate on a Stick

Author: Nikki Gladd

Ingredients

  • 8 oz. high quality chocolate (NOT chocolate chips)
  • ¼ cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • ½ cup powdered sugar

Instructions

  • Sift the cocoa and sugar together into a medium bowl; set aside.
  • Chop the chocolate and place in microwave safe bowl. Melt in the microwave on high, stirring every 30 seconds, until smooth. It should take about 1 minute 30 seconds.
  • Stir in the cocoa sugar mixture, a little at a time, until combined. The consistency will be thick like cookie dough.
  • Divide chocolate into silicone molds. Insert spoons or sticks. Allow to firm up at room temp or refrigerate. Remove from molds.

To Make the Hot Cocoa

  • Heat ¾ cup of milk until hot. Stir in hot chocolate stick until melted.

Notes

  • Use higher quality chocolate with more fat content for best results. NOT chocolate chips.
  • Store in an airtight container for up to 1 year.
  • Chocolate may lighten in color. This does not affect quality or taste.
