DIY Homemade Ranch Dressing

Homemade_Ranch_Dressing_1Last fall, I was on a kick for making my own homemade condiments.  Each recipe I tried was successful.  Then, when our move to Mississippi was confirmed, I stopped my new-found love of do-it-yourself concoctions because I knew they would all be wasted as they wouldn’t survive a 3-day journey across the country.

Now that we’re semi-settled in, I am enthusiastically diving back into the DIY journey.  This week, I will supply you with the three condiments recipes I made before the move, starting with my favorite of the three, this ranch dressing.  When I made my first batch last September, I doubled the recipe and still used it all up before it went bad.  I made Chicken Ranch Pizza, used it as a dip for my Oven “Fried” Pickles, and pretty much slathered it onto every other food that entered my  mouth.  When ranch dressing is available, it’s quite possible I abuse it.  Meaning, it goes on everything.  Now that I can have it homemade, without preservatives, I feel much better about this habit. ;)  And, having it homemade is a measly 5 minutes away.

Homemade Ranch Dressing

Prep Time: 5 minutes

Total Time: 5 minutes

Serving Size: 16 2-Tbsp servings

  • 3/4 cup mayonnaise
  • 3/4 cup sour cream
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  • 1 small bunch of chives
  • 1 small handful of parsley leaves
  • 1 clove garlic
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon pepper (white pepper, preferred)
  • 1/4 to 1/2 cup buttermilk

Dump all ingredients into the blender using 1/4 cup of buttermilk. Mix for 10 seconds. Blend in more buttermilk to achieve desired consistency. Store in an airtight container for 1 week.

I made this same version a couple of weeks ago…it totally rocks! My friends couldn’t believe that I actually made it myself and that it was SO DELICIOUS!

I started making my own homemade ranch just last year and I LOVE it. Store-bought doesn’t even compare. I even tried a jalepeno version once and it was too good!

Ha! I totally abuse it too, and it really bugs Jeff for some reason. Will have to try this out!

The last line of the recipe says “store in air tight container for one week”, does that mean it’s only good for one week or that it should be eaten after one week?!
Thanks!!

It means it should be consumed within the week. It might actually last a little longer, but mine is usually gone by then… :)

Have you ever tired with Miracle Whip…we allergic to eggs..I will have to give it a try without the mayo…we love Ranch!

Hi Jama, I haven’t tried it with Miracle Whip, but maybe you can instead just eliminate the mayo all together and up the amount of sour cream by another 1/4 to 1/2 cup. Let us know how it turns out!

I make this frequently with Vegenaise, an egg-free mayo that taste identical to regular mayo. Miracle Whip still has eggs in it…

I think MW would be too sweet. It tastes totally different than mayo to me. What about Greek yogurt?

How much is a bunch for the chives? Just a matter of taste?

And thank you for sharing your talents with us and for taking the time you do for this blog. It is much appreciated.

Hi Kim, Thanks for the kind note. A “bunch” is hard to describe, but yes, it can be a matter of taste. :) Since it says a small bunch, I would start with just taking a little handful and throwing it in. You can always add more. Hope this somewhat helps!

Can you substitute Greek yogurt for the sour cream? Or the mayo? I wouldn’t do it for both, but just to help out..a little.

You can give it a try. The taste will be a little more tangy, but if that doesn’t matter to you then I’m sure it will work just fine.

I used plain yogurt in place of the buttermilk. It worked perfectly :0)

This dressing is awesome. My daughter loves ranch dressing and I am trying to get away from processed foods. I love knowing what is in the things I’m feeding her. I didn’t have buttermilk, but I just used plain yogurt and it worked great. Thank you so much for the recipe :0)

Glad the yogurt worked as a substitute! Great idea! :)
